Fundamentals of Folk Guitar ( 4 weeks)

October 3 - October 24

Instructor: Ben Hartlage

If you feel comfortable playing and switching between the basic chords, this class will help you take the next step in your guitar playing. We will begin by exploring the dynamic possibilities of chords we already know. We will work on rhythmic variations, stylistic embellishments, common folk chord patterns, and a few fundamental fingerpicking and strumming styles. In class 3 and 4 we will round out our vocabulary of 1st position and movable chords and will take an introductory look at using a capo.

Ben Hartlage has been performing and promoting roots music in the local area for nearly 20 years. He has had the honor of opening for acts such as The Blind Boys of Alabama, David Lindley, and Jake Shimabakuru and was the first promoter to bring Old Crow Medicine Show to Pittsburgh. Ben has an extensive repertoire and has been known to pull 8-hour campfire shifts covering broad range of genres from blues, old-time, bluegrass, country, jugband, and early jazz in addition to contemporary genres and styles. He performs locally with a 5-piece acoustic band, The Turpentiners. Find upcoming performance dates at www.turpentiners.com.
