Beginner Bluegrass Mandolin I (Winter)
In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of bluegrass mandolin playing by learning classic fiddle tunes. Emphasis is placed on technique development, playing with strong rhythm, and melodic improvisation, all taught through practical, song-based instruction.
While this course welcomes students of all levels, the pacing is designed so that complete beginners can comfortably follow along and progress. More advanced students will find opportunities to refine tone, timing, and improvisational concepts.
In this course, students will learn how to apply correct right- and left-hand technique; Play three major scales (G, C, D) and corresponding chop chords; Learn and perform at least two bluegrass standards; Begin developing skills in melodic improvisation; and gain the confidence and tools to participate in a bluegrass jam session.
Although this course emphasizes learning by ear, I will also provide supplemental material, including audio files and some PDFs, so students can practice week to week.
