Guitar I/II: Gillian Welch “Revival” 30th Anniversary (Fall 2026)
This eight-week guitar class will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Gillian Welch’s acclaimed 1996 debut album “Revival” by exploring all ten songs from the album: Orphan Girl, Annabelle, Pass You By, Barroom Girls, One More Dollar, By the Mark, Paper Wings, Tear My Stillhouse Down, Acony Bell, and Only One and Only — likely in that order.
Folk Guitar Circuit Training (Winter 2027)
Think of this class as a circuit training, minus the sweat. Just as gym circuits rotate you through exercises to target different muscle groups, we will rotate through drills that target essential skills you need to play a range of folk guitar styles.
Examples of What We’ll Cover:
- Chords: Unlock more of the fretboard with movable chord shapes.
- Rhythm & Technique: Explore folk rhythms, strumming styles, and picking patterns.
- Basic Theory: Practice thinking in terms of chord families, playing basic scales, and learning how to transpose songs on the fly.
Intermediate Guitar: Songs of Hank Williams, Sr. (Spring 2027)
Each week we will focus on one or two core songs from Hank’s catalog, breaking down the song structure and rhythmic feel. We will listen to and try to apply some techniques that Hank used to add dimension and texture to his strum. And we will observe how Williams squeezed endless variety out of some basic chord progressions. The goal is to expand your repertoire, improve your rhythm, and expose you to some of the inner workings of Hank’s songwriting.
