Bluegrass Improv (Fall)
*This class has reached capacity.
This class is open to players of all bluegrass instruments and is designed to help students develop the confidence and skills to improvise in a bluegrass setting. The class is taught entirely by ear and does not require prior knowledge of music theory.
Rather than memorizing solos or collecting licks, students will learn a practical process for creating their own musical ideas. We will begin by learning a fiddle tune, then gradually explore ways to vary its melody while maintaining the character of the tune. Throughout the class, students will improvise in a supportive group setting where experimentation and mistakes are viewed as an important part of learning.
Students will also develop listening skills, learn bluegrass jam etiquette, and gain experience playing both rhythm and lead in a jam-circle environment.
