Folk Guitar Circuit Training (Winter)

Think of this class as circuit training, minus the sweat. Just as gym circuits rotate you through exercises to target different muscle groups, we will rotate through drills targeting some of the essential skills you need to play a range of folk guitar styles.

Examples of What We’ll Cover

  • Chords: Unlock more of the fretboard with movable chord shapes.
  • Rhythm & Technique: Explore folk rhythms, strumming styles, and picking patterns.
  • Basic Theory: Practice thinking in terms of chord families, playing basic scales, and learning how to transpose songs on the fly.

This class will maintain a consistent demonstrate-and-repeat flow. With each skill, you will get a regular how-to refresher and will play through the skill together. We will repeat the process until each skill starts to become second nature.

A note on materials: While you will receive instructional reference sheets to help jumpstart your practice at home, you will be encouraged to stash the paper away during class. We want you to rely on your ears, eyes, and hands. Our goal is to get these techniques off the page and into your fingers.

Prerequisites

To get the most out of this class, you should already be comfortable playing these basic first-position chords: A, B7, C, D, E, F, G as well as Am, Em, and Dm. Since some of our efforts will involve taking the basic chord shapes and moving them around the fretboard, this class may feel overwhelming if you are still learning those basic chords.

New and Former Students Encouraged to Join

Many of the exercises in this curriculum were built directly from requests by past students. If you’ve taken a class with me before, there is a strong chance you’ll see a topic you asked about featured on the circuit!.

Please contact the instructor at bhartlage@gmail.com with any questions about the class prior to enrolling.
