Irish Session Tunes
The class will teach students some common Irish session tunes to expand their repertoire and help them participate more in an Irish session. Class will be taught by ear, and learning by ear is strongly encouraged. Students will be provided sound files to learn the tunes. Class time will be spent primarily playing through and solidifying the tunes to help the student develop new sets to bring to a session. Open to any melody instrument traditionally used for Irish tunes – with at least an intermediate level of proficiency recommended.
Depending on the progress of the class and time available, various dance tune types will be covered and may include polkas, jigs, reels, hornpipes, slides & barn dances. The emphasis will be on learning the tunes but if time allows other topics that may be discussed include lilt (rhythmic feel), phrasing, and ornaments.
Bring your instrument and a basic recording device to class.
Class is located inside Mellon Hall, Anderson Dining Hall, and Snack Bar, Woodland Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
