Mandolin II (Fall)
Mandolin 2 is designed for players who already have a basic understanding of the fretboard and foundational chop chords. This is a tune-based class, focused on learning fiddle tunes to improve overall musicianship. Students will develop stronger technique, explore the basics of bluegrass improvisation, and build the ability to play confidently at medium tempos. Throughout the course, we will also introduce more advanced mandolin techniques, including cross-picking and tremolo. Students will learn three fiddle tunes and one mandolin solo, while gaining the skills needed to participate effectively in jam sessions.
Although written supplements will be provided, the primary teaching approach is by ear. Concepts and tunes will be carefully broken down so that all students can follow along. Audio recordings of class material will be provided for at-home practice. By the end of eight weeks, students should have a stronger understanding of bluegrass mandolin technique, improvisation basics, and practical jam session skills, along with a clear path for continued improvement.
