Scottish Bagpiping 201: The Great Highland Bagpipe
Students with prior Practice Chanter experience will receive instruction on and about the Great Highland Bagpipe*. A practical approach will be taken toward subjects including but not limited to instrument maintenance, tone production, tuning, ensemble skills, and the personal, physical preparation needed to ensure success and enjoyment in the playing of this instrument. May be taken concurrent with Scottish Bagpiping 101.
1 Great Highland Bagpipe
1 3-ring binder, with notebook paper and clear plastic sleeves, for class notes and handouts
1 Korg TM-60 Chromatic Tuner and Metronome
1 Set of Earplugs, ideally Etymotic “musician” earplugs
1 Instrument Maintenance Kit, usually contained within a small tackle box, to include:
- 1 Sharp Knife
- 1 Roll of Yellow, unwaxed linen hemp
- 1 Chunk of Beeswax (1-6oz)
- 1 Roll of Electrical tape
- 4 #0 (1in) black rubber stoppers (for drone and chanter stocks)
- 3 Foam Earplugs
- 1 Small Tube of T-Zip Silicone Zipper Lubricant (for bags with zippers)
*It is hoped that the majority of students in this course will already possess a bagpipe, however, a limited number of instruments will be available to purchase or rent. If students wish to purchase a full bagpipe for or following the course, they should contact the instructor to discuss options at their earliest convenience.

Refunds, Pro-rates and Cancellation Policy: Refunds will only be issued if Calliope cancels a class due to insufficient enrollment. If that happens, you will be notified in advance and will receive a refund or credit within 30 days from the start of class. No refunds will be given to those who cancel their registration within 2 days before a class starts or after class begins. Classes may not be pro-rated; please plan accordingly. Confirmations will be sent approximately a week before a class starts via email (please specify if you prefer to be contacted by phone).
