WORKSHOP SCHEDULE AND DESCRIPTIONS
11 am-12:15 pm (EDT)
Introduction to Old Time Fiddle (not for complete beginners) with Janie Rothfield
This class is for people who have basic skills on the violin, can play at a slow-moderate tempo, and are looking to start playing old-time music! Janie will teach a few old-time favorites, show you the fundamentals for adding old-time rhythms and accents to your bowing to get that old-time sound. She will get you ready to jam and have fun with old-time.
Intermediate Old-Time Backup Guitar with Allan Carr
This class is for people who can play at a moderate to medium speed in the keys of D, G, A, and even C. Allan will work with you on techniques and tips to help you add speed, rhythm, bass runs, and musicality to your old-time backup to tunes and songs. Required: Capo and Flat pick (we suggest a larger hard pick).
Novice Clawhammer Banjo with Bill Wellington
This class is for people who are just getting started with Clawhammer Banjo and will focus on teaching RIGHT-HAND SKILLS! We will work on the essentials to clawhammer rhythm and melody The Bum Ditty, Pull Off’s, Slides, Hammer On’ and maybe even a little drop thumb! We will learn to play simple chords to accompany a song everyone knows-You Are My Sunshine!! Required: Capo/Longer nails (nail goes beyond the tip) on the right-hand pointer and middle finger essential. Stick on nails work great or plastic finger picks turned around are fine too.

Slower Old-Time Jam with Beverley Street: Join in playing with the band on some Old Time Favorites like Fly Around, Buffalo Gals, and make a request for your favorite tunes! If you are interested in the jam only, please contact disaac@calliopehouse.org to register.

Intermediate Old-Time Fiddle with Janie Rothfield
This class is for people who can already play at a medium tempo at a jam and are looking to “jumpstart” their playing to the next level. Janie will show you techniques and strategies for adding bowing rhythms and patterns and speed to your playing. She will teach several of her favorite old-time tunes from the playing of “Uncle” Norm Edmunds from Hillsville VA and a few other faves TBD!!
Intermediate Old-Time Mandolin
For people who can play melody at a moderate-medium tempo. Bill will teach several wonderful old-time tunes focusing on right hand rhythm and up-down picking techniques to help you with melody, chords, and speed! You will also learn some alternative chord shapes in different positions on the neck and exercises to improve your dexterity and familiarity with the fingerboard.
Intermediate/Advanced Backup Guitar: Alternative Chords and Bass Runs with Allan Carr
For people who can play in a variety of keys (G,D, A, C) in a jam at a medium/faster speed, and who are looking to “up the ante” with their chord and bass run choices in old-time music. This class will go deep into how to play alternative chords “up the neck” as well as rhythm and melody-driven bass runs to a fiddle tune. Required: Capo and Flat pick required (we suggest a larger hard pick).

Intermediate Clawhammer Banjo with Bill Wellington
This class is for people who can play in the keys of C/D and G/A at a moderate speed and are looking to add technique, rhythm, and speed to their playing. We will work on right-hand skills like ghosting and percussive rhythms and adding speed to your playing without sacrificing musicality! Bill will teach several tunes popular in the old-time repertoire. Required: Capo/Longer nails (nail goes beyond the tip) on the right-hand pointer and middle finger essential. Stick on nails work great or plastic finger picks turned around are fine too.
Advanced Old-Time Fiddle with Janie Rothfield
This class is for experienced old-time fiddlers who can play at a medium-fast tempo at a jam. Janie will teach a number of her favorite traditional tunes and a few of her own tunes, in a variety of keys and tunings! This will be a fast-paced class and will focus on how to ramp up your playing with more bowing styles and patterns, rhythm, chords, and creativity.
Scottish Songs with Allan Carr
This is an interactive workshop: Allan Carr is from Aberdeen, Scotland, and grew up surrounded by the traditional music and songs of the Northeast of Scotland. Allan will sing numerous songs, mainly in old Scots, and will discuss the history and context of these wonderful songs that have been sung for hundreds of years, about aspects of Scottish life long ago-to do with work, farming, the sea, love, and family. Allan will provide a lyric sheet for the songs, in advance of the workshop. Students will have the opportunity to sing along, and ask questions and talk with Allan during the class.

Beverley Street will play a wonderful variety of old songs and tunes from the American Old-Time Tradition with their trademark energetic instrumentals and sparkling vocals! Plus some wonderful jigs, reels, waltzes, and songs from the Celtic world, featuring Scotsman Allan Carr’s lovely singing.
